Old School Fun

Back in the day- in the early 80's- I spent many hours at the roller rink with my friends.  Couples skate, the hokey pokey, locomotive chains, and just rocking out to music videos- those were the days. . .

I thought it would be fun to take the kids plus the niece and nephew for some fun at the old rink.  My niece and nephew live close and have been a few times so they are good on skates.  My children, on the other hand, have never been on skates- neither ice nor roller.  They were very excited to try it but were shocked at the challenge once they were up on wheels.  Son #1 and hubby chose inline skates and the rest of us were on the standard 2x2.  The girls and I started slow and hugged the wall for a few laps.  The boys went right for it.  After some tears from the youngest- she finally pulled up her boot straps and went for it.  (Watching her same age cousin skate, fall often and get back up without a problem encouraged her to not be so fearful.)

After 2.5 hours of fun, a few falls, lots of great music, and the hokey pokey (and chicken dance on skates!!!!), we unlaced the skates and called it a successful day. We all left without injury and smiles on our faces.  The kids have asked to go to a rink in California when we return!!
